Watch the video with your class and discuss the ideas explained. Talk about this week’s value and ask the children if they know what it means?

Ask questions around why it is important and how it can make our lives better.

The idea behind watching this video, is to set the foundations of the weekly value and get the children talking and thinking about it as the week progresses.

This week we will read Home and learn all about the power of Determination

What is Determination?

Determination is like when you really, really want to do something and you don’t give up, even if it’s hard. It’s like when you want to learn how to ride a bike, and you keep trying and trying until you finally get the hang of it. Even if you fall down a bunch of times, you don’t give up because you really want to learn.

Having determination is a really important quality to have. It can help you to achieve your goals and overcome challenges. It takes hard work and perseverance, but it’s totally worth it because it can bring a sense of accomplishment and pride.

So next time you have something you really want to do, try to be determined and keep working at it until you get it. You might be surprised at what you can achieve!

Quote of the week - Read and Discuss

  • Each week we will start by reading a quote, talking about what it means to further understand how we can use these words as lessons to learn from.

Read the following quote and discuss it with your class. You may even want to print it out and collate the quotes over the weeks to create a wall of discussion for future research projects.

Read this week’s quote and think about what it means and what we can learn from it to make the world a better place!

You may want to note it down in your notebook and draw a nice picture next to it!

Reading Activity

  • Read the book alongside your class and discuss the various lessons that we can learn from each of the pages and events within the text.

The text was curated by a primary-aged child, so there may be mistakes and this is expected, but the essence of the activity is to explain to your students that these books are about the message inside. The children who wrote these books did so with the intention to teach others about important values.

Have a discussion with your class about the values they spotted inside this book!

Read the book opposite and have a conversation about each of the pages and discuss what values you think are being taught during the story.

Remember that this book was created by a child and they are hoping that, by reading it, you are going to learn something about living your life to help others feel safe, happy and accepted.

Let’s see what you learn!

Weekly Comprehension Activity

  • Read through the task card instructions with your students and make sure that they are aware of all the 4 activities expected of them during this activity.

    1. Fill in the missing words

    2. Answer the comprehension questions (in full sentences)

    3. Define the Keywords in their books

    4. Plan how they will complete the follow-up activity.

After reading the book you will now be feeling more inspired and ready to learn more about the values mentioned in this book.

Take a look at the task card opposite and read the instructions carefully. Answer the questions, fill in the missing words and define the keywords before moving on to this week’s activity below.

Values Activity (Younger Students)

  • During this activity, students will be requested to make a T-shirt with a message about bravery written on the back.

The first thing to do is brainstorm a list of quotes with your class and populate these on the board as a class. You may need to start the conversation by choosing a few common quotes –

    Never Give up

    Just do it

    Don’t look back

Once the class has completed the brainstorming the children will then choose one and design their T-shirt including the quote.

This can happen in 2 ways:

    1. The children can bring a T-shirt into school and paint/draw their message on the back.

    2. The children can use Canva to design their very own T-shirt on bravery.

Design a T-Shirt About Bravery

This week we want you to get your message about bravery, determination and persistence out into the world for everyone to hear.

To do this, we want you to design your very own T-shirt with your message on the back for the world to read.

Brainstorm some quotes with your teacher on bravery (you can even use some of the words from today’s book to help you).

Once you have found a quote you like, it is now time to design your very own T-shirt and tell the rest of the world how important it is to be brave!

You can paint a REAL T-shirt or design one on Canva. The choice is yours.

Values Activity (Older Students)

  • During this activity your class will come together in groups and plan their very own playscript on determination and bravery.

The children are requested to follow the procedure opposite and start to plan their very own play, which will teach others about the importance of never giving up.

The children will need some guidance on writing a playscript, but as the emphasis is on telling a story through acting, the focus should be more on collaboration and teamwork, rather than English.

Write and Perform a Playscript about ‘Not Giving up!’

During this activity, you are going to design your very own 2-minute play about not giving up and perform this in front of the rest of your class or school.

Use the task car opposite to help you plan your very own 2- minute play script and then teach the rest of your class about bravery, determination and perseverance by showing them your play and discussing it afterwards.

You may even want to record your play and send it through to the upschool team!

Your Book of Values (Pages 15-17) - Determination is…

  • Over the next weeks, your children will be creating a simple but very powerful book on values.

Each week we will revisit this task and add three pages to their book until it is complete.

Please allow your children to use the template provided to assist them with their design. The children will need to use this template as the dimensions are very specific.

Once complete your children will add their book to the Upschool library for the world to see.

Your Book of Values (Pages 15-17) – Determination is…

This week we are going to start our very own book on values. Each week, we will ask you to add three more pages to the book. This week we will be adding the next 3 pages on determination.

Use the example to help you continue to create your very own book. Remember to keep it simple and keep your text away from the edges of the page!

Each week we will add three more pages to your book until your Book of Values is complete.

Good luck!

Closing Video - Watch and Think

  • Use this video as a plenary session to help the children consolidate their knowledge and walk away with the feeling that when we look out for others and act with the intention of helping them with no reward, we feel good inside and that is what matters.

Watch and Think – What is Determination?

Watch the video about the small turtle trying to find its way in the world. Discuss with those around you about the journey he is on and how he overcomes the hurdles ahead of him to make it to his final destination.

What will you do the next time something seems too hard to achieve?
