This week’s lesson on SDG 5 focuses on empowering students by highlighting Gender Equality. It captivates students with an informative video on Gender Equality and provides them a variety of challenges to tackle gender disparities.
It fosters thoughtful reflection, encouraging students to record their journeys in a digital resume, deepening their insights into global gender issues. The lesson concludes with a quiz, solidifying their understanding while fostering independence in their efforts to promote gender equality worldwide.
This week we’re shining a spotlight on an incredibly vital goal: SDG number 5 – Gender Equality!
Here’s our journey for the week: First off, we’ll gather around for a compelling video that shines a light on SDG #5. This video is going to open our eyes to why achieving gender equality is essential and highlight the challenges many face simply because of their gender.
Following our video session, I’ve got an exciting challenge lined up for you! You can choose from our special challenge card, all themed around promoting gender equality. Perhaps you’ll create an inspiring poster that champions equality, or maybe you’ll write a powerful poem about the strength and potential of women and girls around the world.
After you’ve tackled your challenge, take a moment to reflect on your actions and feelings. You’ll have the opportunity to add another page to your very own digital portfolio. By the end of our SDG quests, you’ll have 17 incredible tales to share, each representing a step towards a better world!

Weekly Keywords
This activity zeroes in on familiarizing students with crucial terms and concepts related to SDG #5 – Gender Equality. Students are given a list of intricate words and phrases associated with gender equality and empowerment.
They are prompted to break down these terms into simple, everyday language and explore their meanings. This task aims to broaden their vocabulary around gender issues while also honing critical thinking skills as they articulate and grasp the significance of these concepts, enhancing their understanding of the core elements of gender equality for everyone.

This week, we’ll draw inspiration from Emma Watson and her passionate advocacy for SDG 5 – Gender Equality. Students will delve into one of her compelling quotes, interpreting its meaning through their own creative perspective, whether it be through artwork or a visual presentation.
At the core of this activity is deep reflection and meaningful dialogue. It motivates students to deeply engage with the essence of Watson’s message, reflecting on its relevance to their personal lives and its influence on the wider world. This approach fosters critical thinking and facilitates open discussion, allowing students to explore how influential words can mold their perspectives and actions, thus deepening their understanding of gender equality and nurturing a sense of empathy and solidarity.
Each week, we will provide you with an inspirational quote from one of the world’s renowned thought leaders.
We encourage you to take note of the quote, print it out, or create your own drawing inspired by this quote.
Once you have finished, we invite you to reflect on and discuss the significance of this quote. Consider what it means to us and how we can impact the world using this quote as inspiration.
Research - Creating an Infographic
This task involves students in designing infographics that focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG #5: Gender Equality. It celebrates creativity and individual style, encouraging students to dive into research and incorporate their distinct findings and statistics. They have the freedom to shape their infographics using diverse design elements like images, charts, and their selected color palettes, fostering artistic expression.
The activity has a twofold aim: it not only educates them about global gender equality challenges but also enhances their design skills. Finishing this project helps them earn a certificate for each SDG Challenge they complete, marking their progress and engagement with these important global goals.
Every week, you’re stepping up to design challenge: creating a simple yet impactful infographic about one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This week, we’re zooming in on SDG #5: Gender Equality. Start off by checking out the example we’ve shared, then dive into using the template details to design your own infographic focused on Gender Equality.
Feel encouraged to dig up extra facts and figures to make your infographic even more powerful. Your creativity knows no limits – mix in visuals, charts, diagrams, and data however you like. You’re also free to experiment with colors to make your design pop.

This activity engages students in initiatives related to SDG 5 – Gender Equality. They’re encouraged to apply attributes like commitment and perseverance in practical scenarios, increasing community engagement and experiential learning about global gender equality issues. Teachers are encouraged to stand back and allow the children to attempt as many as they wish whilst simply guiding them instead of instructing them.

Spin the Wheel and Use Your Voice
The wheel has chosen the person you'll be writing to.
Before you begin your letter, spend some time getting to know them. Read the information below and do a little research of your own. Find out who they are, what they do, what they believe in and the work they are known for.
The more you learn about the person you're writing to, the more personal, thoughtful and meaningful your letter will be.
As you explore, think about what you would like to ask them. You might want to share the work your class has been doing, ask for their advice, hear their thoughts on an important issue or simply learn more about their experiences.
Once you've finished your research, move on to the writing activity below. You'll learn a simple strategy for writing a respectful, engaging letter that gives you the best chance of receiving a response.
Remember, every conversation begins with someone choosing to reach out. This week, that someone is you.
Research Your Leader Before You Write to Them
This activity gives students the opportunity to communicate with a real person beyond the classroom, providing an authentic audience and a genuine purpose for writing.
Before students begin, encourage them to research the person they have been assigned. Reading about their background, achievements, interests and current work will help students develop a deeper understanding of who they are writing to, resulting in more thoughtful, personalised and meaningful letters. While guidance may be needed for younger students, allowing learners to carry out their own research encourages curiosity, critical thinking and informed communication.
Please ensure that all communication is managed through the school. Letters and emails should be sent using the school's postal address, email address and contact details only. Students should never include their personal home address, personal email address, telephone number or any other personal contact information.
Remind students that they are representing both themselves and their school. Their letters should always be respectful, courteous and considerate, even if they are asking challenging questions or expressing a different point of view. The aim is to encourage meaningful dialogue, demonstrating that respectful communication can open doors, build relationships and inspire positive change.

Once the wheel has decided, your task is to craft an engaging letter, and share your thoughts on this week’s SDG and explain to them how you think they could help.

How To Write a Letter with Personal Thoughts and Emotions
This week, guide students in crafting heartfelt letters on SDG 5 – Gender Equality, blending personal stories with persuasive elements. Lead by example, demonstrating passion and advocacy. Encourage exploration of personal experiences, emphasizing the power of their voices in championing equality.
This exercise enhances persuasive writing, fosters empathy, and encourages civic responsibility. Facilitate reflective discussions to deepen understanding, helping students articulate their emotions and evidence-based arguments, empowering them as advocates for change.
This week in our letter-writing adventure, we’re going to focus on creating letters that truly resonate, guided by my own letter to the Australian Prime Minister.
Before we start, it’s crucial to form genuine points and support them with heartfelt evidence. In my letter, I’ll share personal thoughts and emotions about the importance of gender equality. This connects with our broader goal of bring our communities closer together.
Infusing our letters with sincere arguments and authentic emotions makes them incredibly impactful. It demonstrates that we’ve deeply considered the issue and are genuinely concerned. This approach is particularly effective when addressing someone as influential as the Prime Minister – it significantly increases the chances of our letters being acknowledged.
Make sure to read the example letter we’ve provided. It adheres to all the guidelines we’ve discussed and will serve as an excellent blueprint for your own letter. Let it motivate you to craft a letter that’s equally meaningful.
Post Your Letter - The Power of the Pen
This activity engages students in hands-on learning by having them write letters to world leaders about important issues. It emphasizes determination, as students persistently send letters weekly until they receive a response, teaching resilience and the impact of their voice in global conversations.
The aim is to create impactful, attention-grabbing letters that resonate with influential recipients. Students are encouraged to blend creativity with formal writing skills, emphasizing persuasive language and personal expression. This practical exercise enhances their communication abilities and applies learning in a real-world scenario.
Once you have crafted your letter on the issues that you think are the most important, it is then time to send your letter out to the world and hope for a response.
Each week, we will send a letter to a different world leader in the hope that they will respond.
If they don’t, do not despair; keep going until you get a response and get your voice heard by those who can help you on your mission to make the world a better place.

My Digital Resume - Adding Experience #5
This activity engages students in developing a digital resume that captures their contributions towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Weekly, they are prompted to engage in deep reflection on their actions, assessing both the external impact and the personal development they’ve experienced. Students are guided to succinctly record these reflections, resulting in a comprehensive 17-page resume by the course’s end.
This exercise is designed to enhance self-awareness and the ability to effectively articulate achievements, encouraging students to acknowledge and express the significance of their efforts towards global objectives.
Each week, we’re on an inspiring mission to help you create a digital resume like no other. Picture this resume as a vibrant showcase of your quests, the positive ripples you’ve created in the world, and the personal growth you’ve experienced along the way.

Take the SDG Quiz and Earn Your Certificate
The quiz provides a simple way for students to review and reinforce the key learning from this week's Sustainable Development Goal.
Students who achieve 80% or above will automatically receive a personalised certificate recognising their achievement. If a student does not reach 80% on their first attempt, encourage them to revisit the learning materials before trying again. The aim is mastery, not speed.
The quiz can be completed at school or at home on any computer, tablet or mobile device with an internet connection. This gives families the opportunity to become involved in the learning, revisit important concepts together and celebrate each child's achievement when they earn their certificate.
Each SDG includes its own certificate, giving students the opportunity to build a collection of 17 certificates as they progress through the programme. This encourages perseverance, celebrates achievement and provides tangible recognition of their learning journey.
As students complete each SDG, encourage them to add both their certificate and a reflection on what they have learned to their Digital Résumé, creating a lasting record of their knowledge, actions and impact. Over time, this becomes a powerful portfolio that showcases not only what students know, but how they have used their learning to make a positive difference in the world.
