Take your learning to the world & create change

Using This Course With Younger Children

We are aware that writing, illustrating and publishing a book may be very difficult for some of our youngest students. Therefore, we have devised a series of inclusive strategies for younger students to engage with the program alongside their older counterparts. These activities are explained below and should allow your whole community to enjoy the process of writing a book to change the world, together!

A Differentiated Program

Included in each learning sequence. Parents and teachers can find a differentiated set of activities, which include clear instructions via a pre-recorded video, a set of comprehension questions and keywords associated with the book. Are These Your Glasses? These can all be used with younger students without fear of these activities being too difficult.

Emotional Colouring Book

We are excited to be able to provide you with some amazing free downloads to complement your use of this program with younger students. This ‘Are These Your Glasses’ Colouring Book provides black and white illustrations that align with the narrative. Students read the short blurb about each colouring page, and then choose colours to represent the feelings and emotions in each scene. The book can be broken into weekly activities, spread out over the full 10-week program.

NB – A link to download this resource, can be found in the Teacher Resources section.

Buddy Program

Collaboration is a huge part of the program and therefore at the end of each learning sequence, we request that the older children from year 3 (age 9) onwards are paired up with a younger child to re-teach the same lesson. This not only builds responsibility, teamwork and leadership skills but will also guide the younger children as they also attempt to publish their own books. A separate and simplified lesson plan can be found in the extension activity section at the end of each learning sequence. This includes a weekly checklist of resources and instructions to help guide the older students during the buddy program. We have also included an emotional colouring book, which can be used to allow children to understand the concept of inferential clues and deeper meanings within illustrations.
