Be the change
Learning Sequence 9
Introduction
This week your students will need a lot of time to finalise their slide deck presentation. This week will be about collating all of the evidence and putting the final touches to their presentation before presenting them to the community next week and submitting them.
This week we will also be asking your students to pick an adult to interview and gather feedback, reflection and quotes to help improve the relevance of their presentation.
This week we want you to have more time to finalise your slide-deck presentation ready for submission next week. (Don’t worry if you need more time, that’s totally fine).
A valuable part of the proving that you have made significant changes in your community will be gathering evidence from the people who live in your local area, and this week we are going to be showing you how to interview somebody to gather the quotes, comments and evidence you require to make your presentation.

Watch and Discuss - ‘Weekly Warm-Up Activity'
Each week we will read the book ‘Be the Change’ together as a class and answer a series of comprehension questions based on the changemaker we have just talked about.
The questions will be in the form of literal, inferential and applied questions with added research questions for children to conduct further research once the lesson is completed.
This will give the children insights into how. Changemakers in history have engaged with the world when attempting to make significant differences in the lives of the people, animals, insects and organisms on this planet to make it a better place.
Please read pages eighteen and nineteen based on the life of Jane Goodall and answer the following questions.
In which continent was Jane Goodall born?
When Jane had enough money to visit Africa, which country did she visit first?
Why did she choose this country?
Jane has no formal training on Chimpanzees, but how did this help her?
How many years did she dedicate to studying chimpanzees?
Why did Jane win so many awards?
What discoveries did Jane make about chimpanzees?
What is Jane Goodall doing today and what can we learn from her life?

Week 9 Goal Reflection
As we near the end of the course, it is important that the groups take time to reflect upon which actions they have achieved and which are still pending. Encourage groups to collaborate and even assist them with ways in which they may be able to achieve some of these goals so late in the day by setting targets for the next term if need be?
For example – They may wish to start a ‘walk to school Wednesday’ initiative beginning next term. This will allow them to tick off the action as completed!
Take a moment to join your group of changemakers and reflect upon which of your actions you have accomplished over the last week.
It is also important to note that we are now entering week number 8 and some of our actions may not have been completed. As a group, have a very clear conversation with your group about how you intend to tick off all twelve of the actions we had planned.
Remember it is OK if some of the actions are not completed. If only one of the actions has been completed, that is more than enough and change is starting to occur. Well done everybody.

Interviewing an Adult
As we near the end of the course, it is important that the groups take time to reflect upon which actions they have achieved and which are still pending. Evidence and feedback are very good ways of proving to the world that the actions we have taken have made significant differences in the way that your community operates.
This week we are going to ask you to find a parent or teacher within your community and ask them a series of questions about their experience over the past 9 weeks. This may take a few days to organise, but before Learning sequence 10 we would like you to have interviewed at least 1 community member.
It is important that before you interview the adult, that you seek permission from your teacher and always have another adult present during the interview.
The interview can happen in three ways:
-
The adult can be invited into school, to conduct the interview in person.
-
The adult can be called over the telephone or via an online meeting..
-
The adult can be a staff member who works at your school or the Principal
Whilst the interview takes place, notes of what they say must be recorded so that they can be added to your slide-deck presentation!

Documenting Your Favourite Quotes
During this activity, students will get to refine their skills of comprehension, but also editing and collecting data and information, which is the most relevant
We are requesting that groups of students listen again to their interviews and listen for any good quotes or pieces of information that parents or adults have shared with them which they would like to then add to their presentation.
The children will have to use their skills of negotiation, compromise and comprehension, to be able to decipher which quotes are relevant and which need to be left behind.

Adding Animations to Your Presentation
To make sure that your presentation stands out and catches the attention of the panel, we are going to show you how you can add animations to your text, pictures and even whole pages to give your slide deck the attention that it deserves.
Take a look at the following video, but remember not to overdo the addition of these custom animations, You want it to look professional but not too much.
Less is sometimes more!!
SDG 15 and 16 - Weekly Round-Up!
This fun quiz will allow your students to think collectively about the natural environment and sustainability within our world.
Show the children the questions Aligned with sustainability goal numbers 15 & 16 and each week we will add this quiz to the learning sequence to build more knowledge around this topic.
This should be a fun activity with no pressure around points, scores, rankings or percentages.
The teacher is now going to show you a series of questions on the Interactive whiteboard at the front of the classroom. Your job is to try to answer the questions correctly. You can talk to the people around you to help you answer the questions.
Test your knowledge and have some fun as you try to answer these questions collectively with the people on your table or in your group. Remember, it doesn’t matter if you get anything wrong, this is purely for fun and to gain more knowledge about sustainability and protecting the environment.

Closing Video
Just around the corner, you will be submitting your presentation to the Upschool team to see if you will be selected as a keynote speaker at the upcoming conference on World Children’s Day on November the 20th. How exciting.
This week we have asked to finalise your slide deck by adding some community quotes and feedback.
Don’t forget to take a look at the extension activities this week because one of them is about inviting your community into school for an event.
Ongoing Follow-Up Activities
Extension Activity - Buddy Program Week 9
During this week’s learning sequence, the older students will guide the younger students on adding certain animation techniques to their presentation to make it look special and stand out
We are also requesting that the mentor this week allows the younger child to choose an adult within the school to ask some questions to during an interview.
The buddy will enable the younger student to edit and insert the quotes into their slide deck as evidence that change is a positive experience for everybody involved.
This week you will help your body to finalise their presentation slide deck so that it is ready for next week’s upload to the upschool platform.
You will also assist your buddy in finding an adult to ask some questions of. This will allow them to gather quotes which can then be inserted into their presentation and ultimately give feedback to the students about how well they have done over the last nine weeks.
We will also be asking you to assist your buddy in adding some special animation features to their presentation and this may take time, patience, and great communication skills. Well done. You’re doing an amazing job.

Extension Activity #2: Designing a Certificate
Next week, your families will be arriving at school to tell you their stories and explain how they feel about the change that has been happening within the school and within the wider community
To celebrate the change that has been occurring within your school community, we would like you to design a certificate to say thank you and well done to the parents in your community, for participating in this change-making community initiative and hand it to your parents and families as they arrive at school next week.
Use the template as a guide to design your very own certificate. Use it to thank your parents and the adults within your community for taking part and also congratulate them on making a significant change in saving the world and making the future better for everyone.
This week is about showing gratitude.
