Cultures Around The World
Learning Sequence 3
Introduction With Gavin
During this activity, you’ll guide students in exploring global flag symbolism, starting with Tibetan prayer flags in Thukla. Students will research a flag from a chosen culture, analyzing its colors and designs to understand its significance. This encourages critical thinking and cultural awareness.
The activity culminates in a creative task where students design their own flag, integrating learned concepts. This fosters creativity and personal expression, highlighting how flags reflect diverse identities and values worldwide.
This week, we’re learning all about flags! We’re starting our adventure in Thukla, a special place high up in the mountains on the way to Everest. Here, we’re surrounded by colorful Tibetan prayer flags that flutter in the wind.
We’ll explore what these prayer flags mean. They have different colors and symbols, and each one tells a story about the local people’s beliefs and hopes.
Then, we’ll look at flags from all over the world. Everyone will examine the flag from their chosen culture or civilisation, looking at the colours and the shapes, and what they stand for. We’ll talk about how each flag is special and what it means to the people who use it.
To make things even more fun, we’re going to create our own flags! You can make a flag for a made-up country or group, and it can stand for things you think are important, like friendship, peace, or taking care of the earth.
By looking at all these flags, we’ll learn how people everywhere use flags to show who they are and what they believe in.
En Route to Everest - Where are We?
This activity involves tracking a journey to Everest Base Camp on a map each week, offering students a global perspective.
Teachers can use this to encourage research on Sherpa culture and remote villages, enriching students’ understanding of diverse lifestyles and geographical awareness.
Throughout this course, we will gradually make our way to Everest Base Camp, located at 5,364 meters. You can track our journey on this map each week, and if you are interested, you may wish to conduct further research on these remote villages to understand more about how the Sherpa people live.
Thai wee we are coming to you from 5000m at Thukla Pass. The gateway to Everest!! If you are interested then please conduct more research on this remote location.
